Erros típicos de quem fala português

Errado Tell to him the truth, he deserves it.
Certo Tell him the truth, he deserves it.
«Diz-lhe a verdade» tem «lhe», e «lhe» parece «a ele». Mas tell leva a pessoa logo a seguir, sem to: tell him, tell us.
Errado He always says lies about his age.
Certo He always tells lies about his age.
«Dizer mentiras» não é say: as mentiras, as histórias e as anedotas «contam-se» em inglês: tell lies, tell a joke, tell the truth.

A armadilha típica

Errado He said me that the meeting was cancelled.

Certo He told me that the meeting was cancelled.

O critério é formal e não de sentido: se logo a seguir ao verbo vier um me, him ou us, tem de ser tell. «Disse-me» é He told me, nunca He said me. E ao contrário, He told that … também não existe: tell sem pessoa não se usa.

say tell leva a pessoa; say não.
count «Contar uma história» é tell; count é só contar números.
