O que este verbo tem de especial

Irregular em muitos tempos: o mais seguro é aprender a tabela inteira. → Os verbos irregulares
As três formas básicas a aprender: be – was – been.
Da lista de palavras: Um só verbo para ser e estar, o que é uma simplificação grande. É também o verbo mais irregular da língua: am, is, are — was, were — been.

Erros típicos de quem fala português

Errado Look at the clock: is almost midnight.
Certo Look at the clock: it is almost midnight.
Em português «é quase meia-noite» não precisa de sujeito. Em inglês o verbo nunca fica sozinho: para horas, tempo e distâncias entra o sujeito vazio it — it is late, it's raining.
Errado I am in Porto since March.
Certo I have been in Porto since March.
«Estou no Porto desde março» usa o presente porque a situação continua. Em inglês, o que começou no passado e dura até agora vai para o present perfect: I have been + since.
Errado The life is too short to stay angry with your sister.
Certo Life is too short to stay angry with your sister.
O português põe artigo nas ideias gerais («a vida», «o amor»). Em inglês, um nome abstrato em sentido geral não leva the: life is short, love is blind.

A armadilha típica

Errado What do you do? — I am to go home now.

Certo What are you doing? — I am going home now.

Dois erros de origem diferente encontram-se na mesma frase. O primeiro é de escolha: «O que fazes?» traduzido à letra dá What do you do?, que pergunta pela profissão. O segundo é de forma e é português puro: «estou a ir» tem um infinitivo lá dentro, e o infinitivo passa para o inglês sem passar pelo -ing.

Combinações de palavras frequentes

be in a hurry — estar com pressa
be fed up with something — estar farto de algo (coloq.)
be about to do something — estar prestes a fazer algo
be out of breath — estar sem fôlego

Verbos que se confundem

have Idade, fome e sede «têm-se» em português; em inglês «é-se»: be thirty, be hungry, be thirsty.
stay «Ficar» para dizer onde algo se encontra é be; stay é ficar sem sair do sítio.
