The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

“The car of my friend” puts the thing first, and a learner who thinks of 的(de) as “of” keeps that order. But 的(de) is closer to “'s”: the owner comes first, 的(de) follows it, and the thing comes last.

Wrong:这(zhè)是(shì)车(chē)的(de)我(wǒ)朋友(péngyou)。
Right:这(zhè)是(shì)我(wǒ)朋友(péngyou)的(de)车(chē)。

The full explanation

Read it all · about 1 min

的(de), said in the neutral tone, joins an owner to what is owned, much like English “'s” or “of”: 我(wǒ)的(de)书(shū), my book, 老师(lǎoshī)的(de)电话(diànhuà), the teacher's phone, 我(wǒ)朋友(péngyou)的(de)车(chē), my friend's car. Pronouns have no possessive forms of their own: 我(wǒ)的(de) is both “my” and “mine”, 你(nǐ)的(de) both “your” and “yours”, and so on.

The owner always comes first. English can say “the capital of China”, with the thing first and the owner after “of”; Chinese has only one order: 中国(Zhōngguó)的(de)首都(shǒudū), China's capital. Every “of” of possession has to be turned round.

After a personal pronoun, 的(de) is usually left out before family members and other close people: 我(wǒ)妈妈(māma), my mother, 他(tā)哥哥(gēge), his older brother, 我(wǒ)朋友(péngyou), my friend. The same goes for a group or place the person belongs to: 我们(wǒmen)学校(xuéxiào), our school, 我们(wǒmen)公司(gōngsī), our company, 我(wǒ)家(jiā), my home. With 的(de) these are not wrong, only more emphatic.

With things, 的(de) stays: 我(wǒ)的(de)手机(shǒujī), my phone. Quick speech sometimes drops it there too, but write it. And when the owner is a noun rather than a pronoun, 的(de) stays even before family: 老师(lǎoshī)的(de)孩子(háizi), the teacher's child.

A closer look

Zhōngguó péngyou or Zhōngguó de péngyou?

Two nouns side by side without 的(de) often name a kind rather than an owner. 中国(Zhōngguó)朋友(péngyou) is “a Chinese friend”, a friend who is Chinese; 汉语(Hànyǔ)老师(lǎoshī) is “a Chinese teacher”, a teacher of Chinese. With 的(de) the meaning shifts to belonging: 中国(Zhōngguó)的(de)朋友(péngyou) is “a friend of China”.

This is why 的(de) drops so easily before family and groups: “my mother”, “our school” are felt as fixed relationships rather than possessions. With a thing that can change hands — a phone, a bag, a car — Chinese keeps the particle that marks ownership.

Exceptions and special cases1
  1. Exception

When the owner is stressed or contrasted with someone else

then 的(de) stays even before a family member.

她(tā)是(shì)我(wǒ)的(de)妹妹(mèimei),不(bú)是(shì)他(tā)的(de)。She is my sister, not his.

Why? 的(de) puts weight on the owner, and a contrast needs exactly that weight.

Worth knowing1
  1. Worth knowing

    Whose? Shéi de

The question “whose?” is simply “who” with 的(de): 谁(shéi)的(de). It stands where the owner would stand, and the answer swaps in a name or a pronoun: 我(wǒ)的(de), 小(Xiǎo)李(Lǐ)的(de).

    这(zhè)是(shì)谁(shéi)的(de)?Whose is this?
