  • They pay her very well at the new job.

  • Incorrecto I paid the concert tickets with my card.

Correcto I paid for the concert tickets with my card.

En español se «paga algo» directamente. En inglés, lo que compras lleva for: pay for the tickets. Sin for van la factura, la cantidad o la persona: pay the bill, pay 20 euros.

  • Incorrecto You have to lend attention in class.

Correcto You have to pay attention in class.

Incorrecto ⟦I want pay⟧ by card.

Correcto ⟦I would like to pay⟧ by card.

I want pay by card. Falta el to, que en inglés va siempre entre want o would like y el verbo. Y want suena brusco con alguien que te atiende, aunque «quiero» no lo sea en español: lo normal es I would like to pay.

Deseos: would like, want, like

Combinaciones frecuentes

  • pay in cash — pagar en efectivo
  • pay back a loan — devolver un préstamo
  • pay a visit — hacer una visita
  • pay off — dar resultado / valer la pena

I spent fifty euros on shoes.
