More about this list
Asking the way is the first exercise where the answer has to be understood as well. Two phrases carry almost all of it — ¿Dónde está …? for a particular place and ¿Hay … por aquí? for any one at all. What the answers are built from is worth a warning: the polite imperative. Gire, siga and cruce are the forms used to tell a stranger what to do, and they are not what this list would lead you to expect from girar, seguir and cruzar. English has one imperative, identical to the plain verb; Spanish has a separate set for usted, and those are the ones heard in the street.
