Greetings and politeness in Spanish

The words every conversation starts with.

Practise this list

From these 41 words, as many per round as you like — up to all of them: first what is due today, then new ones. First you choose, then you fill the gap, then you write it yourself. Mistakes come back again shortly.

More about this list

Knowing only this list you cannot tell a story yet, but you can speak to somebody, introduce yourself, say thank you and leave politely. And on the very first day Spanish asks for a decision English never asks for: whether the person in front of you is a tú or an usted. ¿Cómo estás? and ¿Cómo está? differ by one letter and by everything else. English had the same split once and lost it — « thou » is the half that went — so there is no habit left to lean on, only a judgement to make each time somebody is addressed.
