El expediente is not « expedient », and the gap between them is the whole of this list. In English an expedient is a makeshift means, or an adjective for what is convenient rather than right. In Spanish el expediente is the file: every paper about one case, in order, with the case number on the front. From there it goes everywhere. El expediente académico is your school record. Abrir expediente a alguien is to open disciplinary proceedings, and somebody expedientado is under investigation. Both words come from the same Latin verb for setting a thing free to move; English kept what gets the problem out of the way, and Spanish kept the papers that were sent on.
