Travel, errands and appointments

Travel, car, plane, hotel, shopping, bank, school, applications.

What holds these lists together

The areas where you no longer just name things but arrange, book, complain and cancel: at the counter, at the station, at the garage, on the phone — and, further up, the working vocabulary of roads, railways, flying and the sea. That is why so many fixed phrases collect here, quanto custa, vale a pena, dar um passeio, and why they are worth learning whole rather than building. One verb shows how the lines fall differently from English. Perder covers both «lose» and «miss»: perdi as chaves and perdi o comboio use the same word, and an English speaker hunting for a separate verb for the train will not find one.

For example: a agenda (the diary), a caneta (the pen), a partida (the departure), a loja de roupa (the clothes shop), o tempo livre (free time), a escola (the school)
