More about this list
An English reader meets der Kipper and thinks of breakfast. On a German building site the word means nothing of the kind: it is a tipper lorry, the vehicle whose body tilts up to empty itself, and it is named after the verb kippen, to tip, which also stands behind abkippen further down this list. A foreman who says der Kipper kommt um sieben is waiting for a load of gravel, and the smoked fish on a German breakfast table goes by other names, der Bückling among them. The rest of the list is built the way the trade thinks, by weight and by coupling: what the lorry weighs empty, what it may weigh loaded, how much of that rests on each axle, and how a trailer is hooked on, dropped and held down. Those are the words a weighbridge, a depot and a roadside check actually use.
