Mistakes English speakers often make

  • Wrong Je peux vous demander une question ?

Right Je peux vous poser une question ?

In French you do not ask a question, you put one: poser une question. Demander is used for the answer you are after: je peux vous demander l’heure ? Demander une question is common in casual Québec French, but not standard.

Common word combinations

  • poser ses valises — to settle somewhere
  • poser un lapin à quelqu’un — to stand someone up (colloquial)
  • poser pour une photo — to pose for a photo
