Mistakes English speakers often make

  • Wrong Le médecin a parlé que tout allait bien.

Right Le médecin a dit que tout allait bien.

Reporting what someone said goes through dire: il a dit que. parler is not followed by que; it takes de or à.

A common trap

Wrong Ils parlarent toute la nuit.

Right Ils parlèrent toute la nuit.

From il parla it is easy to derive ils parlarent — no such form exists. The third person plural of -er verbs ends in -èrent, with an accent: ils parlèrent, ils arrivèrent. And as for use: because «I spoke» is perfectly ordinary English, English speakers are the likeliest to carry the passé simple into conversation. Telling someone about yesterday takes the passé composé.

Passé simple: reading the narrative tense

Common word combinations

  • parler fort — to speak loudly
  • entendre parler de — to hear about
  • parler affaires — to talk business
  • se parler — to be on speaking terms

Easily confused verbs

  • discuter discuter is a conversation with some back and forth; it can be friendly chat as well as debate.
  • dire If English could use “say” or “tell”, French usually wants dire; “speak” and “talk” are parler.
