Money, finance and economy

Accounting, tax, banking, loans, insurance, stock market.

What holds these lists together

These lists approach one question from several sides: what is there, how much of it belongs to the tax office, and in what form the whole thing exists at all. Their words either never appear in daily life or mean something else there. O IRS has nothing to do with Washington: it is Portugal’s personal income tax, with o IRC as its corporate twin. A liquidação of a tax is its assessment, not a winding-up, and apurar means to reduce a sauce in the kitchen and to determine a figure in tax law. What binds them is the demand for precision: no word in a set of accounts may be roughly right.

For example: o balancete (the trial balance), o imposto sobre o rendimento (the income tax), a forma jurídica (the legal form), a economia (the economy (of a country)), estar endividado (to be in debt), o agravamento do risco (the increase in the risk)
