Society, news and history

News, the media, the press, social issues, history.

What holds these lists together

News Japanese is a register of its own, and the difference is visible in a headline before it is heard: particles are cut, verbs drop away, and a line ends on a noun such as 発表(はっぴょう) or 逮捕(たいほ). The broadcast version is fuller but just as formal, and two endings decide how sure a report is: によると names a source, and とみられる marks what is believed but not confirmed. History adds its own way of counting time, by periods such as 江戸(えど)時代(じだい) and by the era names still printed on official forms. The lists run from an ordinary bulletin to the issues a society argues about.

For example: ニュース (news), 社会(しゃかい) (society; the world (of work)), 番組(ばんぐみ) (programme (TV or radio)), 少子化(しょうしか) (falling birth rate), 記者(きしゃ) (reporter; journalist), 元号(げんごう) (era name)

Spread across the levels

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
