More about this list

A classification ruling usually ends on one sentence, and its grammar is worth getting exactly right: Das Gerät fällt unter die Position für Datenverarbeitungsmaschinen. English says a product falls under a heading, and German uses the same picture, but unter is one of the prepositions that take either the dative or the accusative, and here only the accusative is correct: unter die Position, unter das Verbot, unter den Begriff der Maschine. Nothing is moving and nothing is being put anywhere; the case comes with the phrase unter etwas fallen, in the sense of being covered by a rule. Put it in the dative and the sentence starts to describe a page layout: unter der Position is whatever is printed further down, below the heading. The same accusative follows wherever a rule decides whether something is covered — a tax, a law, an exemption — and a tariff file is simply the place where it turns up most often.
