Mistakes English speakers often make

  • Wrong Darf ich Ihnen eine kurze Frage fragen?

Right Darf ich Ihnen eine kurze Frage stellen?

English “ask a question” repeats itself happily; German does not. A question is gestellt: eine Frage stellen.

  • Wrong Er hat mich für Hilfe gefragt.

Right Er hat mich um Hilfe gefragt.

“Ask for” is not für: what you ask for follows um + accusative – um Hilfe fragen, more politely um Hilfe bitten.

Common word combinations

  • nach dem Weg fragen — to ask the way
  • gefragt sein — to be in demand
  • um Rat fragen — to ask for advice

Easily confused verbs

  • bitten Asking someone to do something is bitten: Ich bitte dich, leiser zu sein.
  • antworten You antwortest on a question: auf eine Frage antworten, and the person gets the dative.
